1869 Dexter Velocipede William Van Anden, Poughkeepsie, New York
Van Anden’s patented velocipede included several improvements over previous
designs, which were rejected by bicycle enthusiasts of the time who thought
the bicycle should be kept as simple as possible. The Dexter Velocipede had an
innovative freewheel unit inside the hub of the front wheel. This allowed for the
rider’s feet to remain motionless on the pedals while the velocipede continued
to propel forward by momentum, acting as an early coaster brake. This
optional feature could be disengaged via a small plunger in the hub.
