1875 Shire Boneshaker J. Shire & Co., Detroit, Michigan
Shire velocipedes are noted for their large drive front wheels. The front fork on
the late-1870s Shire Boneshaker was similar to the early ordinaries. The Shire
design has an open-head style with a large wheel and a low saddle, which made
for a fast ride and made it easy for the rider to get on and off. This is also one of
the earliest uses of pedals as well as a very early American-made cycle.
