1898 Ladies’ Chilion Bicycle
M.D. Stabbins Manufacturing Co., Springfield, Massachusetts
Wooden bicycles became popular during the late 1890s, partially due to a steel
shortage. The makers of Chilion bicycles advertised many other advantages of this
hickory frame – one being its natural resistance to buckling when the rider ran
into an object with force, and another that wood is a natural shock absorber. Most
importantly, the Chilion did not rust.
